6 In my distress I called to the Lord; I cried to my God for help. From his temple he heard my voice; my cry came before him, into his ears. 16 He reached down from on high and took hold of me; he drew me out of deep waters. 17 He rescued me from my powerful enemy, from my foes, who were too strong for me.  Psalm 18:6, 16-17 (NIV)

One of the great privileges of being a parent is the opportunity to hold a sleeping baby. There is nothing more peaceful than a baby falling asleep in your arms. As I watched my children slip deeper into their peace, their rest becomes infectious, often causing me to find my own rest. But rest never lasts forever.

Recently, I was holding Charissa as she slipped into unconsciousness, when suddenly she awoke in a screaming fit. I’ve come to realize that crying is a natural part of a baby’s life. I’ve also realized that most times when a baby is crying, I experience a sense of inadequacy and helplessness. I sang, I begged, I struggled to console her, yet nothing seemed to work. I finally had to admit my failure and handed my crying princess off to MaryEllen, who was able to comfort her in a way only a mother can.

As I slowly regained my composure and dignity, I began to remember the many times I’ve cried out for help in my life. I remembered the many dark and troubling moments when I saw no hope. My mind flashed to the many tears and scars my soul bears. And as I reminisced, I was reminded of King David’s words, “In my distress I called to the Lord; I cried to my God for help. From his temple he heard my voice; my cry came before him, into his ears.”

The comforting promise King David reminds us all is that no matter what situations we may be going through in our lives, we serve a God who HEARS our cries. He’s not just a cosmic being who listens to us, wishing we would cease our whining and be silent. God HEARS our cries and responds. God responded to King David’s cry for help, “16 He reached down from on high and took hold of me; he drew me out of deep waters. 17 He rescued me from my powerful enemy, from my foes, who were too strong for me.” God is not only a God who HEARS but also RESPONDS. God REACHES DOWN. He TAKES HOLD of us. He DRAWS US OUT. He RESCUES us. No matter the enemy, no matter how far you feel from God, no matter what adversary you may be facing, God is bigger than them all. Cry out to the one who can rescue you from it all for crying out loud.
